Competitive and creative culture

Art and culture in the town
Culture has the potential to profile Albertslund and instil pride in local residents and employees. Our competitive cultural profile helps attract new residents, employees and enterprises to Albertslund. Art and culture enrich our lives, giving us a sense of fellowship, vitality and shared experience.

Music is something special in Albertslund. We offer a rich variety of cultural activities for all ages, right from early childhood. We have one of Denmark’s best music schools, and the music school’s orchestras are in a league of their own. Albertslund’s strong music initiatives in primary and lower secondary schools and our future culture centre Kulmøllen are further examples of the special status of music in our community.

· We will set the agenda for what we want to focus on and be known for in the cultural arena.

· We will continue to be an innovative local authority that is willing to devote resources to art and culture.

· We will continue to stage a variety of high-quality professional cultural events and provide space for innovation and creativity.

· We will spread art and cultural events throughout Albertslund so that residents will be more likely to meet them.

· We will continue to develop options for cultural expression, especially for children.

· We will maintain the special position of music as a high-priority area and look into the possibility of establishing an advanced orchestra programme.

KEY POLICY DOCUMENTS

1. Cultural policy: The council has decided to draw up a cultural policy.

Cultural diversity
Albertslund has a diverse population, and we should reflect this in our cultural activities by presenting artists from cultural and ethnic backgrounds other than Danish and by making cultural activities available to a mixed audience.

· We will enrich the cultural and ethnic diversity of our cultural life.

· We will develop new methods for involving citizens.

· We will work with new forms of cooperation and new partners (civic groups, enterprises, creative industries, societies, individuals, and so on) in order to learn about new ways of thinking and to attract new user groups and audiences.

Cultural meeting place
The area around the Rådhussøen lake is the site of several cultural flagships: the main library, the MusikTeatret cultural centre and the Forbrændingen concert hall, with the nearby Albertslund Centre affording ample opportunities to profile and highlight our cultural activities. The expansion of this cultural hub is well underway, and along with the continued rebuilding of the main library will result in an attractive, modern cultural meeting place.

· We will integrate culture, the environment and sports in the cultural centre being expanded and completed by the lake.

· We will develop the grounds surrounding the cultural centre to inspire creativity, recreation and artistic expression.

· We want to work with the business community to develop cultural projects.

· We want to gear the new culture centre, Kulmøllen, specifically to youth culture as a place that unites environment, sports and culture.

COPENHAGEN WEST DEVELOPING – TOWNS IN MOTION

The experience economy

Vision

In 2020, Copenhagen West wants to be known for:

An experience economy that is a commercial hub known throughout Denmark and beyond. Copenhagen West is characterised by:

· Creativity: People with ideas and entrepreneurial drive.

· Cultural history: We know the interesting history of our towns and we know where they are headed.

· Entertainment and recreation: Inspiring and dynamic sports, nature, dramatic art, music and film.

· Opportunities: You can find a handball court, a bridle path, a practice room and an art studio here.

· Unlimited possibilities: Activities across all sectors – public and private, in real buildings or on the virtual Internet.

· Diversity: Activities within the experience economy create new integration opportunities.

Strategy and action plan

The local authorities in Business Development Network – Copenhagen West will work together to:

· Support the development of cultural lighthouses. Lighthouses make national and international impact and are unique to Copenhagen West. A lighthouse can be a one-off event, a formalised hub or network in a specific cultural area where institutions, organisations and private individuals meet. Lighthouses can be at one location or spread out and linked by a specific theme.

· Establish a joint cultural investment fund and implement a joint marketing project by early 2009.
